" FLICKER OF AN EYE " EP reviews in 2008 released in October 2008 via URBCOM and other selected underground reatl outlets ( worlwide ) RE-ISSUED on the 01-02-2010

..J. Hookens has been a busy man indeed; as the head of UK underground label Urbcom, he's built up a small but powerful catalog of some of the edgiest and most diverse electronica one could ask for. Incorporating all styles from dubstep to breakcore to good old-fashioned EBM, Urbcom is perhaps the modern electro scene's best kept secret, steadily working its way to the masses one release at a time. After disbanding his JERICO ONE> project in 2007 , Hookens plunged himself headfirst into THE DIELECTRIC, a new outlet featuring a rotating cast of several different established and emerging new collaborators.

On Flicker of an Eye, the group's second EP, Hookens takes his cinematic soundscapes and noisy beat-driven electronica down even more mysterious paths than he ever dared to tread with Jerico One>. "Dimensions" perhaps best exemplifies THE DIELECTRIC's sound as a steady EBM-ish breakbeat in tandem with a simple but edgy synth bass line gives way to an atmospheric array of static electronics shooting past the listener's ears, like driving through the city at night, the flashes of lights and the bustle of urban squalor here and gone "In the Flicker of an Eye." Karen King's vocals add a ghostly quality to the already sparse arrangements of "Belief," where the pops of a slight bass refrain underscore a tapestry of electronic noise, each sample - be it a catchy breakbeat, a screeching of static noise, or an emotive string loop - appearing and disappearing into the mix, giving the track all the eeriness of a Throbbing Gristle track, though slightly less caustic and somewhat more melodic.

Also notable is the closing track, "Re:Location," on which Japanese cyberpunk writer Kenji Siratori makes one of his distinguished appearances, his rousing voice spouting out another one of his renowned poems, as always, recited in his native Japanese, backed by an equally stirring bed of gritty ambient loops with sudden stabs of noise and beats to create a chillingly nightmarish track. While Flicker of an Eye is but the second in a trilogy of EPs by THE DIELECTRIC, the tracks presented here not only display Hookens & co.'s ever present penchant for juxtaposing brief yet noisy moments of sonic experimentation with accessible rhythms befitting the modern industrial dance floor, but they stimulate the listener to await a full-length release as well. The only major downside to the EP is its length as each track stays in the three-to-four minute range, making for an unsatisfying trip, and offering barely crumbs in what could still promise to be a very delectable feast. However, if nothing else, THE DIELECTRIC's Flicker of an Eye is perhaps a reassuring indication of where Urbcom will be taking the underground in the years to come.

REGEN MAGAZINE / USA 2008

..Jostling for our attention with their 'Rapid-Eye Assemblage 'music-art project. A three part trilogy unleased at the start of 2008 by this new UK,German based experimental electronic outfit. Formed at the end of 2006 by founder member J.Hookens ( Formerly of JERICO ONE>. The intresting thing about THE DIELECTRIC they not so much play instruments as paint vivid, visual pictures from their own collective consciousness to produce a complex, ambiguous blend of sophisticated industrial-convulsive instrumental, vocal electronica that is full of manic poise .

Volume two comes hot on the heels of the wonderful and intoxicating 'Rapid-Eye Assemblage Volume-1" released and deleted earler in 2008 via the bands own ( thedielectric.org website ). "Flicker Of An Eye " mixes experimental idm elements, together with distopian, nocturnal male/female vocals set behind an array of exciting dark atmospherics and rhythms . Making it hard not to get sucked in with the slo-mo reverb and the subversive electronic sounds they destroy to create . The final impression of The Dielectric on this 5-track digital-only ep is of a music collective of rare feeling and intelligence with a genuine sincerity to produce new experimental sounds that are adventurous, listenable and uncompromising .

SHOCK ART - FANZINE HARD-COPY ISSUE #3

..Helmed by J. Hookens, whom was once mastermind behind JERICO ONE>, this moody EP stirs up memories of hypnotic electronic artists like Coil, Sleep Chamber, and The Klinik. Humming with a spectral chorus, “Introjection” eases one into their experimental slumber, as undulating wet textures and scattered percussive clicks help further this isolation tank impression. The automated tin stamp and sedate bass rumble in “Dimensions” proves rather animated in comparison, with some grave mesmerising utterances and occasional drill bit whirs furthering its bleak-meets-tense atmosphere.

Again, a disparity between rhythm and detached vocals resides in the dismal “Belief”, a stark corner which houses only a quirky computer twitter, a percolating snare hiccup, and the vaporous lilt of guest spectre Karen King. Finally, it is worth noting that “Flicker Of An eye” is the second part within a trilogy of EPs; though whether this excerpt is indicative of THE DIELECTRIC’s overall sound remains to be seen, it is nonetheless an interesting diversion into the realm of claustrophobic soundscaping.

SIDE-LINE / ONLINE / 2008

..THE DIELECTRIC is a release of the British URBCOM label and they are known for the adventurous and qualitywise good electronic-industrial releases. The Dielectric is a follow-up to the Jerico One> project of J.Hookens and Flicker of an Eye is the second EP in the Rapid-Eye Assemblage trilogy of this project. With The Dielectric, Hookens works together with various artists from the music and art world. Thus we can find Berlin based Daniel Erhardt as member. In the by breakbeats dominated song ‘Belief’ female vocals can be heard from Karen King ( c / o Black Rain Records ).

In the ominous sounding ambient song ‘Re:location’ the Japanese cyberpunk writer Kenji Siratori is present with spoken word fragments. Musically The Dielectric concentrates on electro with cinematographic qualities. More experimental than Jerico One but rhythmically still quite accessible, like we can notice in the track ‘Dimensions’. Hookens voice adds a typical old school EBM dimension to the experimental-industrial sound. The best track is ‘Excursion’ with its pulsating beat and psychedelic electronic soundscape that reminds of the music of FSOL. As such this MCD consisting of five tracks gives a good impression of the sound of The Dielectric but is also somewhat on the short side. It does make curious to the coming album release of this English and German project. But first in 2009 we will see the release of the third part of the trilogy.

GOTHRONIC / ONLINE / 2008

.. THE DIELECTRIC is the project and braincild of the former JERICO ONE frontman J. Hookens. Musically THE DIELECTRIC doesn’t break away a million miles with Hookens' previously discovered path only more moody and seductive, and his signature noise outbursts remains alive. This EP offers 5 rather abstract-minded Electro/Industrial ambient tunes, which all offer a quite hypnotic feeling thanks to a relative noise compositional effort. Varied in its rhythm programmings somewhere between 2-Step, Trip-Hop and IDM, the tracks are filled with dozens of FX manipulations and do not at all intend to satisfy a usual listening experience.

”Dimensions” can be named as the main track featuring a clear vocal performance and a rather calm sound outfit. The other tracks are turning more or less near to an IDM-related outfit, ”Re:location” for instance features the Japanese Cyberpunk-artist KENJI SIRATORI with a spoken-word guest performance. A quite interesting release by J. Hookens, but at least a bit too short with only 18+ minutes playing time. It's clear to recognize that the sound dimension of THE DIELECTRIC should be able to offer more stuff. Where’s an album?
